Family Swimming School

Family swimming school is designed for children from around 3 years and up, offering a shared learning experience where children and parents develop swimming skills together in a safe and supportive environment.

At Pikku Delfiinit, the family swimming school focuses on building water confidence, basic swimming skills, and long-term water safety through playful and guided learning.

What is family swimming school?

It allows families to:

  • support children’s early swimming development

  • build confidence in water at the child’s own pace

  • enjoy structured, guided swimming practice with a parent

The key idea is simple: children learn best in water when a trusted adult is involved.

What do you learn in family swimming school?

In family swimming school, we focus on developing fundamental swimming skills step by step.

Typical learning goals include:

  • getting comfortable and relaxed in water

  • floating and gliding

  • basic kicking and propulsion

  • arm movements and coordination

  • breathing control and water confidence

  • safe movement in the pool environment

Learning is always playful, structured, and adapted to the child’s readiness.

What is the goal of family swimming school?

The main goal is to create a strong foundation for independent swimming.

By the end of the program, children are typically working towards:

  • basic 10 meter swimming ability

  • progressing towards 25 meter swimming skills

  • improved water safety awareness

  • confidence to move independently in water

The focus is not speed, but safe and confident movement in water.

Why choose family swimming school?

Family swimming school helps families by:

  • making swimming learning safe and enjoyable

  • reducing fear of water through gradual exposure

  • strengthening parent–child interaction in a meaningful activity

  • supporting children’s motor development

  • building lifelong swimming and safety skills

Teaching philosophy

At Pikku Delfiinit, we do not focus on performance.

Instead, we focus on:

  • child-led learning

  • safety and trust in water

  • playful progression

  • individual readiness

Children progress only when they are ready—never under pressure.

Summary

Family swimming school is a safe and structured way for children to learn real swimming skills together with their parents.

At Pikku Delfiinit, we focus on:
- Safety
- Joy in water
- Confidence building
- Long-term swimming ability

As swimming skills develop, the child’s motor development is strengthened.

Children also have the opportunity to earn official swimming badges from the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation, such as beginner, recreational, and technique badges. (The beginner badge requires a 10-meter swim, while the recreational badge requires 25–50 meters.)

Throughout the lesson, the focus remains on one key question: What does our child enjoy right now?
